Washington Post-Schar School Poll: Americans Are Deeply Divided Over Use of Military in L.A. Protests

Body

A new poll by the Washington Post and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University shows that Americans are largely split on the question of supporting the Trump administration's use of the National Guard and Marines to quell unrest in Los Angeles.

Republicans overwhelmingly favor Trump’s National Guard decision and most Democrats oppose it, according to the survey. Independents skew toward opposing the action. The survey shows Californians are more supportive of the protests and far more opposed to the use of military force.

The poll also asked if the protests are perceived as mostly peaceful or mostly violent, with 66 percent of Republicans indicating they believe the protests are violent, with 60 percent of Democrats saying the opposite.

While 43 percent of those asked in the random sampling say the military and law enforcement are using “enough force” in handling the protests, 26 percent said more force was called for.

The complete results of the June 11 poll of 1,000 respondents can be found at this Washington Post website.
